Wave Shaper

What it is

A waveshaping distortion that passes each input sample through a shaping transfer function held in a lookup table, so the output level is a chosen non-linear function of the input level. A Wave shaping function selector picks the curve — Quantization (a stepped, bit-crusher-style staircase), Compression, Expansion, Uniform noise, a Chebyshev polynomial (for controlled harmonic generation), or a custom curve loaded from file. Quantization steps sets the number of levels for the quantization curve, Severity drives the amount of compression, expansion or added noise, Chebyshev order selects the polynomial order, Gain scales the level, and Length sets how much of the shaping table is used. It takes one audio input and one audio output, in mono or stereo.

How it works

The chosen function is pre-computed into a shaping table spanning the input range clipped to plus or minus one; each incoming sample is scaled, used to index that table, and read back through it to produce the shaped output. Each channel is shaped one sample-frame per tick, in step with WaveWarp's sample-per-sample engine.
