Modifies the dynamic range of the input audio signal, ensuring that the output signal level does not exceed a user-defined threshold. A delay buffer is incorporated to give the limiter a "look-ahead" capability, improving its effectiveness in some situations. NOTE: This component is particularly useful for the prevention of digital clipping The behaviour of the limiter can be adjusted via its Parameter Window as summarised in the following table. Parameter Purpose "Threshold" slider Sets the limiter threshold. The purpose of the limiter is to ensure that the output signal level does not exceed this threshold. "Attack" slider Sets the Attack Time for the peak level measurement. "Release" slider Sets the Release Time for the peak level measurement. "Averaging" slider Sets the averaging time for limiter's gain smoother. "Delay" slider Sets the delay length for the "look-ahead" buffer. "Output Gain" slider Adjusts the amplitude of the output signal, after the limiting has been applied.
The look-ahead limiter is implemented by measuring the peak of the audio signal and applying an automatic gain control to a delayed version of the raw signal, where the gain is based on the relative values of the peak measurement and the desired threshold. See [Zo] chapter 7 for a detailed explanation.
